What happens, in order
- Ask at the counterWalk-in, no appointment; a member of staff takes the photo between other duties.
- Say which document it is forName the country and the document — that is how the size is chosen.
- Stand for the cameraAgainst a plain backdrop, with the height set so the head sits in the frame.
- One or two framesSome staff will take a second frame if the first looks wrong; ask politely.
- Prints handed overUsually two prints, with a digital copy at some chains.
- Check before leavingSize, head height, shadow and glare — while a re-shoot is still free.
No price is quoted here because the chains do not publish one consistently, and the figure varies by store and by promotion. Ask before the photo is taken rather than after; the fee is for the service, not per print, and a re-shoot within the same visit is normally included.
What to bring, and what to say
Bring the number, not the name of the photo. Staff who take passport photos every day know the common U.S. 2 × 2 inch square, and they know the 35 × 45 mm portrait used by several countries. They are much less likely to know that a Chinese visa photo is 33 × 48 mm or that a Canadian passport photo is 50 × 70 mm with a stamp on the back — so say the millimetre size and, if the counter agrees, watch that it is set.
Appearance matters as much as the size. Remove glasses before you stand for the camera, because a U.S. photo does not allow them at all and glare ruins the eye line in any photo. Keep your expression neutral with the mouth closed, keep both eyes open, and leave a plain wall behind you rather than a shelf of products or a doorway.
Six checks before you leave the counter
Compare the print against the number on your form, then check the head: neither tiny in the frame nor cropped at the top. Look for a shadow line behind the shoulder or under the chin, which is the most common counter fault and comes from the flash or the overhead light. Check both eyes are open and clear, with no reflection over them.
Then check the edges and the quantity. A print cut off-centre leaves a white sliver down one side, which a printed form box will show up, and one print is often not enough — most applications want two, and some want the back of one signed or stamped. Raising a fault at the counter costs nothing; raising it at an appointment costs a trip.
The checker reports measurements, not approval. It tells you which published rule your file fails and by how much, from the pixels of the file in your browser. The decision always belongs to the authority you file with.
When a pharmacy counter is the wrong choice
Three situations. An unusual block, where the counter has no preset and the staff are not confident about setting a custom size — a studio or a mail-in service is safer. A stamped or endorsed photo, such as the Canadian stamp or an Australian guarantor endorsement, which a counter cannot provide. And a strict light requirement, where the store’s mixed lighting produces a colour cast that a plain wall at home would not.
For everything else it is hard to beat: fast, walk-in, printed in front of you and re-shootable on the spot. Take the print home and, if there is any doubt, measure it — the checker needs a digital file rather than a print, so the routes page explains what to ask for if you also need a digital copy, and the rejection page lists the faults that most often escape a counter check.
